Creating an XFS file system on Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) V6.9 fails

Creating an XFS file system on Red Hat® Enterprise Linux® (RHEL) V6.9 fails. However, the file system is created successfully on a virtual machine with RHEL V7.3.

Problem

Deploy a new pattern by using the RHEL V6.9 operating system (OS) with a default disk add-on and the XFS format file system. As a result, the deployment reports a successful completion. However, the new disk is not found to be attached to the virtual machine. This result is because the RHEL V6.9 OS image that is bundled with IBM® Cloud Pak System System does not originally support the XFS file system. Due to this limitation, the add-on storage cannot be created on versions before RHEL V7.0.

Resolving the problem

RHEL V7.0 or later versions includes the XFS package, xfsprogs, that enables creation of an XFS file system. This package is used to create the XFS file system on an RHEL OS. In the versions earlier to RHEL V7.0, the Red Hat Scalable File System is available only as a product option for the XFS® file system. Therefore, for versions before RHEL V7.0, install the xfsprogs package separately or manually, and then format and mount the additional disk after you deploy the pattern.

However, if you use RHEL V7.0 or later as the base OS image within a pattern, the XFS file system can be created successfully.
