IBM Log Viewer portlet

The IBM Log Viewer portlet is a web application that displays and analyzes log files in your IBM® Digital Experience on Cloud and IBM Digital Experience Plus on Cloud environment.

Note: If the Log Viewer portlet is not deployed on your system, open a service request to add it.

When you load the Log Viewer Portlet, it shows a log file tab for each log that you have access to. Additionally, it also shows a closeable Welcome tab and an About tab that shows license and version information. The View icon opens the Log Viewer in a full screen overlay mode. This view is often useful if the space dedicated to this portlet is limited.

Multi-Term Highlighter and Jumper

One of the most advanced features is the Highlighter. It supports highlighting several terms at a time in different colors and helps you jump between the terms. To highlight terms, enter them in the yellow highlighter field. Separate several terms with semicolons. Press Enter to start case insensitive matching. Press Shift+Enter to start case-sensitive matching. To cancel the current highlighting selection, delete the contents of the field and press Enter.

Log Tailing - Pause/Resume

By default, each log tab is opened in follow tail mode. If you want to pause the follow tail, click Pause. If you want to resume the follow tail, click Resume.

Log Tailing - Scroll Lock Feature

Sometimes you need to lock the log tail's scrolling position in a static place while you analyze the logs. Click Scroll Lock to lock the log tail. While the scroll is locked, tailing continues but the scroll bar remains in place.

Log Tailing - Fetching more history

By default, the Log Viewer portlet fetches only the newest 100 KB entries of a log file. If you are interested in older log entries, click Fetch more history to fetch older parts of the logs in 100 KB increments.
Note: The Log Viewer works like a rolling log. After a configurable threshold of lines is displayed in the browser client, the older ones are discarded to avoid blowing up the browser memory usage. This threshold can be configured in edit mode.

Log Download - Downloading the complete log files

If you want more sophisticated analysis or if you want to send the log file to another person, download the log file. Click Download File to download the file.

Log Filter - online filtering your tailing log

When you analyze errors in a multithreaded environment, it is useful to filter the log output. For example, you can filter for the thread ID. In the Log Viewer portlet, you can configure arbitrary complex linear expression filters to filter your logs to meet your needs. The Log View portlet contains a preconfigured filter for thread ID filtering. It is java.util.Logging. Edit the filter to ensure that it is configured for the current log tab.

To use the filtering capabilities, click Filtering to open the filtering dialog. A dialog displays the filter values for the log tab. Check the Enable filter check box and then select every thread ID that you want to see the log output for. Click OK to activate the filter or click OK & Highlight to highlight the different filter values. Now, you see only the log output that matters to you. You can jump through the filter values with the highlighting feature. To disable filtering, click Filtering and clear the Enable filter check box.
