Recommendations for using CSEs
CSEs are not intended to model, discover, nor represent the topology of a network. Rather, CSEs are intended to model services and define the dependent relationships between objects that impact the availability of the service.
When modeling network services by using CSEs, consider the following guidelines:
- Model services as the upper objects in the CSE tree.
- Model network components and devices as the lower objects in the CSE tree.
- When modeling parent and child objects, determine which component affects the other component. If two components have no effect on each other, they must reside in two distinct branches of the CSE tree.
Tivoli® Netcool® Performance Manager is not intended to:
- Graphically represent network topologies.
- Draw a graphical representation of the CSE tree.
- Discover the links and dependencies between components. Most of the time, this information is fed from an external component into Tivoli Netcool Performance Manager (as properties) and is used to create the model.
