Jython Editor

The Jython editor is a tool for editing and viewing Jython scripts.

You can use the Jython editor to perform a variety of tasks such as the following:

Develop Jython script files
Edit Jython script files
Import existing Jython files for structured viewing
Set breakpoints for debugging your scripts

The Jython Editor is also integrated with the WebSphere® Administrative Script Launcher and Debugger tools, so you can, run and debug script files directly from the editor.

The Jython editor has many text editing features, such as syntax highlighting, unlimited undo or redo, and automatic tab indentation. When you tag a comment in a Jython script with "#TODO", the editor automatically creates a corresponding task as a reminder in the Tasks view. Then, if you open the task later, the editor automatically synchronizes to that TODO entry in the script source. Other helpful features are content assist and tips which provides a list of acceptable continuations depending on where the cursor is located in a Jython script file, or what you have just typed.

Restriction: The Jython editor is not integrated to a compiler. As a result, the Jython editor does not perform syntax verification on your scripts.

Outline view

Associated with the Jython editor is a Jython-specific Outline view. The Outline view displays an outline of a Jython file that is currently open in the editor and lists its structural control blocks.

The structural elements displayed in the Outline view may include any of the following elements:

Jython element	Icon	Description
Class		A model or template that can be used to create objects with a common definition and common properties, operations, and behavior.
Global function		The scope of the function is global and is intended for use by other scripts.
Internal function		The scope of the function is local and only intended for use within the script, and not by other scripts.
Loop statement		The loop statement icon is displayed in the Outline view when a looping statement is defined in the Jython Editor, such as `while` or `for`. Beside the loop statement icon, , the Outline view displays the target of the assignment.

Toggle the Sort (

) and Hide Internal Targets (

) buttons in the Outline view toolbar to sort or filter the view's display. When the Sort button is selected, the structural elements in the Outline view are sorted alphabetically. When the Hide Internal Targets button is selected, no Internal functions are displayed in the Outline view.
