Description

Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack for Workstations is a file protection system for workstations and notebook computers. Your most important files can be continuously protected. Your less important files can be protected at scheduled intervals to save time and storage space. You can prevent any changes, including deletions, to files in folders that you designate as vaults.

Continuously protected files are backed up to a local drive. Backup copies are created even when network conditions prevent storing backup copies on remote storage locations. Files that are continuously protected can also be stored on remote storage locations, when network connections allow. If a remote location is not available when you change a file, the client makes a backup on that device when the device becomes available. Scheduled backup copies are created on the interval that you configure, either hourly, weekly, daily, or monthly. If the remote device is not available at the time of the backup, the client makes backups on the remote location when the device becomes available.

You can use the FastBack for Workstations Central Administration Console to manage clients in the following ways:

Discover existing Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack for Workstations clients and Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files clients.
Monitor the activity of clients to determine the health of your data protection system.
Tune performance of clients and react to potential problems to maintain the highest level of data protection. You can update configurations and send command scripts.
Deploy FastBack for Workstations software updates throughout your enterprise.

Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack for Workstations can store backup copies on a Tivoli Storage Manager server, but there is no requirement to use Tivoli Storage Manager. Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack for Workstations is a stand-alone product and has no dependencies on Tivoli Storage Manager or Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack.

The Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack for Workstations client is updated with the following enhancements:

Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack for Workstations Starter Edition: A starter edition of the client is now available.
Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack for Workstations OEM Edition: An OEM edition of the client is now available.

The Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack for Workstations Central Administration Console is updated with the following enhancements:

Relational database: A relational database is added to improve the management of large numbers of clients on the central administration console server. Also, the display of clients in the user interface is modified so that only one page of data is shown at a time. Instead of listing all of the clients in a single page, you can select page sizes of 25, 50, 100, or 200 clients. Functions are provided to recover the database from a backup in the event of accidental removal or deletion.
Reporting backup activity: The central administration console includes a Reporting feature that you can use to generate data about backup activity for Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack for Workstations clients and servers. You can run default example reports or you can create your own customized reports.
