Hosting units on other units

A hosting link indicates that one unit is hosted on another. For example, hardware hosts operating systems, operating systems host applications, and Web servers host Web applications. The target of the link is the unit that provides the hosting, and the source of the link is the unit that is hosted.

About this task

You can create a hosting link between two units in any of the following ways, but only if the target is a valid host for the source, as described in Rules for hosting links.
  • Drag the hosting link handle from the source unit to the target unit, or drag the hosting link handle to an empty place on the diagram to search the topology for targets.
  • Select Hosting Link from the Palette and drag the link from the source unit to the target unit.
  • On the error or warning that states that the unit requires hosting, use the resolution to automatically create a hosting link.
  • Drag the hosted unit directly onto the host unit. Dragging a unit in this way creates the hosting links and shows the unit on the host, as described later in this topic.

By default, if the target unit is not a configuration unit, the hosting link is shown as a double line from the source unit to the target unit.

Conversely, if the target unit is a configuration unit, by default it appears inside the source unit, like a membership link.

You can switch between the two styles by right-clicking the target unit and then clicking Format > Show Unit on Host or Format > Don't Show Unit on Host, as appropriate, or by dragging the unit onto or out of the host.

You can tell the difference between a hosted unit and a member unit because the target of a membership link has a single arrow overlay, while the target of a hosting link shown inside its host has a double arrow overlay, like the double line that indicates a hosting link:
