Preparing the 5148-21L, 5148-22L, 8247-21L, 8247-22L, 8284-21A, or 8284-22A system for operation after installing a PCIe adapter in Linux

Learn how to prepare the system for operation after you install the Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) Express (PCIe) adapters in the system.

To complete this procedure, you must have installed a PCIe adapter in the system. For instructions, see Installing a PCIe adapter in the 5148-21L, 5148-22L, 8247-21L, 8247-22L, 8284-21A, or 8284-22A system with the power turned on in Linux.

To prepare the system for operation, complete the following steps:

  1. Ensure that you have the electrostatic discharge (ESD) wrist strap on and that the ESD clip is connected to an unpainted metal surface. If not, do so now.
  2. Replace the service access cover. For instructions, see Installing the service access cover.
  3. For a rack-mounted system, place the system into the operating position. For instructions, see Placing a rack-mounted model into the operating position.
  4. Replace the front cover. For instructions, see Installing the front cover on the 5148-21L, 5148-22L, 8247-21L, 8247-22L, 8247-42L, 8284-21A, 8284-22A, 8286-41A, or 8286-42A.
  5. If removed, connect the cables or transceivers to the adapter.
  6. If you installed a PCIe3 cable adapter, and want to connect an EMX0 PCIe3 expansion drawer to your system, proceed to Connecting an EMX0 PCIe Gen3 I/O expansion drawer to your system.
Note: Connecting expansion drawer cables is a nonconcurrent procedure, which requires the system to be powered off.
  7. Route the cables through the cable-management arm.
  8. In the Linux session on the console, press Enter after you have installed the adapter.
  9. On the console, use the lsslot command to verify that you have installed the PCI adapter in the correct slot.

To verify the installation, complete the following steps:

    1. Enter lsslot -c pci -a. The information about the slots is displayed.
    2. Enter the slot information with the lsslot command, as shown in the following example.

For example, if the slot in which you installed the PCIe adapter was U7879.001.DQD014E-P1-C3

      Enter lsslot -c pci -s U7879.001.DQD014E-P1-C3

The following screen is an example of the information that is displayed by this command:
      # Slot Description Device(s)
      U7879.001.DQD014E-P1-C3 PCI-X capable, 64 bit, 133MHz slot 0001:40:01.0
