Using the IBM i tools to work with the temporary and permanent side of the service processor

Learn how to use IBM® i tools to determine which side of the service processor you are booting from.

Note: You should usually be running on the Temporary side.
  1. Issue the following command from the IBM i service partition command line:
    DSPPTF
  2. Record the information that is displayed in the IPL source field. You will need this information later in this procedure if you need to change the boot side. The following is an example of what might appear:
                                   Display PTF Status
                                                                 System: xxxxxxxx
     Product ID . . . . . . . . . . . . . : 5722999
     IPL source . . . . . . . . . . . . . : ##MACH#B ##SERV#T
     Release of base option . . . . . . . : V5R3M0 L00
    Note the following:
    • A value of ##SERV#T indicates the temporary side was used.
    • A value of ##SERV#P indicates that the permanent side was used.
Note: If the command does not work, ensure you are on the IBM i service partition.
  3. If necessary, you can change the boot side.
