Creating paging devices on the Virtual I/O Server
A paging device is required for each shared memory partition. The size of the paging device must be equal to or larger than the maximum logical memory defined in the partition profile.
Paging devices are owned by the Virtual I/O Server (VIOS). A paging device is either a logical volume or a whole physical disk.
If you are using whole physical disks, the physical identifiers (PVIDs) of the disks must be cleared, the disks must be configured, and the disks must be available on the VIOS.
If you are using the Integrated Virtualization Manager (IVM) to manage your
system, the process of creating paging devices is automated. After
the IVM creates
a memory pool, the IVM performs
the following functions:
- Prompts you for a volume group to use for paging
- Creates paging devices with uniform size after considering the requirements of your partitions
- Automatically resizes the paging device after the partition maximum memory increases and deletes the paging device
If you are configuring storage area network (SAN) storage for paging devices, you must follow the best practices when you are assigning SAN logical units (LUN)s to the PowerVM® Active Memory™ Sharing pools.
