Removing GX adapters from the 8248-L4T, 8408-E8D, or 9109-RMD with the system power turned off

Learn how to remove GX adapters from the 8248-L4T, 8408-E8D, or 9109-RMD with the system power turned off.

If you are installing a new adapter, see Installing GX adapters in the 8248-L4T, 8408-E8D, or 9109-RMD with the system power turned off to obtain adapter slot locations and details of the supported adapters. If you are removing or upgrading an adapter as part of a service procedure, complete the following procedure.

Note: Removing or replacing this feature is a customer task. You can complete this task yourself, or contact a service provider to complete the task for you. You might be charged a fee by the service provider for this service.

If your system is managed by the Hardware Management Console (HMC), use the HMC to remove an adapter. For instructions, see Removing a part by using the Hardware Management Console.

If your system is not managed by an HMC, complete the following steps to remove the adapter:

  1. Complete the prerequisite tasks. For instructions, see Before you begin.
Note: Do not disconnect the power cords at this time.
  2. Identify the failing part. For instructions, see Identifying a part.
  3. Stop the system. For instructions, see Stopping the system or logical partition.
  4. Open the rack rear door.
  5. Disconnect the power source from the system by unplugging the system.
Note: This system is equipped with a second power supply. Before continuing with this procedure, ensure that the power source to the system has been disconnected.

  6. If necessary, disconnect any cables connected to the adapter at the rear of the system. See Figure 1.
  7. Attach the wrist strap.
    Attention:
    • Attach a wrist strap to an unpainted metal surface of your hardware to prevent electrostatic discharge (ESD) from damaging your hardware.
    • When using a wrist strap, follow all electrical safety procedures. A wrist strap is for static control. It does not increase or decrease your risk of receiving electric shock when using or working on electrical equipment.
    • If you do not have a wrist strap, just prior to removing the product from ESD packaging and installing or replacing hardware, touch an unpainted metal surface of the system for a minimum of 5 seconds.
  8. Push the locking tab (B) to the left and rotate the GX card cover in the direction shown in Figure 1.
  9. Slide the adapter straight out of the slot.

  10. If you are not replacing the adapter or installing a new adapter, place a filler panel in the slot. Seal the expansion slot by using an expansion slot cover.

Next, replace the adapter that you removed. For instructions, see Replacing GX adapters in the 8248-L4T, 8408-E8D, or 9109-RMD with the system power turned off.
