Removing a Universal Serial Bus device from the 8202-E4B, 8202-E4C, 8202-E4D, 8205-E6B, 8205-E6C, or 8205-E6D

Use this procedure to remove the Universal Serial Bus (USB) device for servicing the system or replacing a failed drive.

Attention: If you are removing a media device to install a new or upgraded media device, see Installing a Universal Serial Bus device in the 8202-E4B, 8202-E4C, 8202-E4D, 8205-E6B, 8205-E6C, or 8205-E6D. If you are removing a media device as part of a service procedure, use the following procedure.

If your system is managed by the Hardware Management Console (HMC), use the HMC to complete the steps for removing media devices from the server. For instructions, see Removing a by part using the Hardware Management Console.

If you do not have an HMC, complete the following steps to remove the media device:

  1. Identify the system that you will be working on by using the identify the system process to turn on the system locate (blue) indicator. For instructions, see Control panel LEDs.
  2. Use the service indicator light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to help identify the part. For instructions, see Identifying a part.
  3. Complete the prerequisite tasks. For instructions, see Before you begin.
  4. Stop the system. For instructions, see Stopping a system or logical partition.
  5. Remove the front cover:
  6. For a rack-mounted system, place the system into the service position. For instructions, see Placing a rack-mounted model into the service position.
  7. Disconnect the power source from the system by unplugging the system. For instructions, see Disconnecting the power cords.
    Note: This system is equipped with a second power supply. Before continuing with this procedure, ensure that the power source to the system has been completely disconnected.

  8. Attach the wrist strap.
    Attention:
    • Attach a wrist strap to an unpainted metal surface of your hardware to prevent electrostatic discharge (ESD) from damaging your hardware.
    • When using a wrist strap, follow all electrical safety procedures. A wrist strap is for static control. It does not increase or decrease your risk of receiving electric shock when using or working on electrical equipment.
    • If you do not have a wrist strap, just prior to removing the product from ESD packaging and installing or replacing hardware, touch an unpainted metal surface of the system for a minimum of 5 seconds.
  9. Remove the media cables (C) provided at the back of the device before removing the media device as shown in the following figure.
  10. Press the release latch (A) and unseat the media device (B) from the system.
    Note: If you want to install a new SAS media device, ensure that you retain the latch (A) for use with the new media device.

  11. Pull the media device from the system.
  12. Perform one of the following steps after you remove the media device:
    1. If you removed the media device as a part of another procedure, return to that procedure.
      Note: If you do not intend to replace the media device that you removed, you will require a filler in place of the device to ensure proper system air flow.
    2. If you removed the media device to replace the media device, see Installing a universal serial bus disk drive in 8202-E4B, 8202-E4C, 8202-E4D, 8205-E6B, 8205-E6C, or 8205-E6D.
