Replacing the 8248-L4T, 8408-E8D, or 9109-RMD TPMD card

Use this procedure to replace the thermal power management device (TPMD) card.

Before installing or replacing a feature, ensure that the software required to support the feature is installed on your system. For information about software prerequisites, see IBM Prerequisite. If the required software is not installed, see the following websites to download it, and then install it before continuing:

If your system is managed by the HMC, use the HMC to complete the steps for replacing the TPMD card in the server. For instructions, see Exchanging a part using the Hardware Management Console.

To replace a TPMD card from a system that is not managed by an HMC, complete the following steps:

  1. Use the service indicator light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to help identify the part. For instructions, see Identifying a part.
  2. Complete the prerequisite tasks. For instructions, see Before you begin.
  3. Attach the wrist strap.
    Attention:
    • Attach a wrist strap to an unpainted metal surface of your hardware to prevent electrostatic discharge (ESD) from damaging your hardware.
    • When using a wrist strap, follow all electrical safety procedures. A wrist strap is for static control. It does not increase or decrease your risk of receiving electric shock when using or working on electrical equipment.
    • If you do not have a wrist strap, just before removing the product from ESD packaging and installing or replacing hardware, touch an unpainted metal surface of the system for a minimum of 5 seconds.
  4. If necessary, remove the TPMD card from its antistatic package.
  5. Press the push button on the planar to turn on the TPMD LEDs.

  6. Install the TPMD card as follows:
    1. Gently push the card straight into its slot on the system backplane.
    2. Push the tab (A) in the direction shown in the following figure to fit the card into its position.

  7. Place the system in the operating position. For instructions, see Placing a rack-mounted model 8248-L4T, 8408-E8D, or 9109-RMD in the operating position.
  8. Replace the front cover onto your system. For instructions, see Replacing the front cover on the 8248-L4T, 8408-E8D, or 9109-RMD.
  9. If you removed the power cords, connect all power cords to the unit you are servicing.
  10. Verify the installed part, as described in Verifying the installed part.
