Unable to sign on because of a lost or expired password or disabled user ID

Learn how to correct a problem when you are unable to access the takeover function.

If you have the special dedicated service tools (DST) Sign-on window but are unable to sign on because of either a disabled user ID or expired password, you can attempt recovery by doing the following:

This action causes the console to be lost temporarily. The device then becomes the console with a sign-on window appropriate to the system state, assuming that it matches the current console type setting. For example, if you perform an initial program load (IPL) of the system to the command line, you see the IBM® i Sign-on window. You can then sign on using any user ID with the authority to continue the recovery of the Dedicated Service Tools (DST) user ID that has the problem. For more information about the DST user ID and passwords, see Working with the service tools device ID.
