xSeries 460/ System x 3950

Learn how to install a card number 2689 machine type 1519 model 100 IXA card into an IBM® xSeries® 460 or System x® 3950 server.

Note: This server requires a special version of the RS-485 shielded cable included with machine type 1519 model 100 at EC level H86427 or later. This cable can be ordered as P/N 01R1484.
Restriction: If you are configuring the xSeries model 460 or System x 3950 as a multi-node system, the IXA card is only supported in one-node and two-node configurations.
The IXA card can be installed with the IBM eServer™ i5 or eServer p5 server system power on or the system power off.
Restriction: On iSeries® systems the IXA adapter can only be installed with the iSeries server power off.

To install the card, complete the following steps. You might need to refer to your xSeries or System x server information for some of the steps.

Important: The IXA card should only be installed in the primary node when configuring the xSeries model 460 as a multi-node system. The IXA is not required or supported in the secondary node. For instructions on configuring the xSeries 460 as a mulit-node system see your xSeries documentation.
  1. If you want to install with the eServer i5 or eServer p5 server system power off, see Stop the system or logical partition for instructions on stopping the system. Then return to this step.
  2. Ensure that the xSeries or System x server power is off.
  3. Unplug the xSeries or System x server power cord from the electrical outlet
Note: This system might be equipped with a second power supply. Before continuing with this procedure, ensure that all power sources to the system have been completely disconnected.

  4. Provide 3.3v standby power for the card position by doing the following:
    1. Record the machine type of your xSeries or System x server:
      • 8872 (all x366 models and older x3850 models)
      • 8878 (newer x3850 models)
    2. For machine type 8872, locate J35. For machine type 8878, locate J33. Install a jumper to connect the pins by doing one of the following:
      • For a 2-pin configuration, install a jumper to connect the two pins.
      • For a 3-pin configuration, move the jumper from the default position to the enabled position by moving the jumper to the uppermost 2 pins as viewed from the front of the server.
    3. For machine type 8872, locate J40. For machine type 8878, locate J39. Install a jumper to connect the pins by doing one of the following:
      • For a 2-pin configuration, install a jumper to connect the two pins.
      • For a 3-pin configuration, move the jumper from the default position to the enabled position by moving the jumper to the rightmost 2 pins as viewed from the front of the server.

  5. Refer to the xSeries or System x information to install the card in card position 2.
Note: Two card positions are used by the card, so you might need to move an existing card to install the Integrated xSeries Adapter (IXA) card in the correct position. Also, you will need to remove the blue card extender from the IXA card prior to installing it.
  6. After the card is installed, return to these instructions.
  7. Connect the SPCN Connection Block (P/N 04N2652) to the IXA card J15 position. Connect the cable to the SPCN network of your system. Ensure that the cable is routed to maintain a recommended minimum 6–inch separation from any alternating current (ac) power cord.

  8. Connect the gray RS-485 shielded cable (P/N 01R1484) , the end labelled "ADAPTER", to the IXA card 485 label.
  9. Connect the other end of the gray RS-485 shielded cable, the end labelled "SYSTEM", to the port labelled "SYSTEM MGMT RS-485" on the back of the xSeries or System x server.

  10. Connect any high-speed link (HSL) cables that you ordered to the card 0 and 1 label. For more information, refer to High-speed link (HSL) information in the IBM eServer Hardware Information Center.
  11. Plug the xSeries or System x server into an electrical outlet.
  12. Go to Expansion units in the Installing hardware topic to complete setup for the xSeries or System x server. Then return to this step.
  13. If the i5 or p5 server system power is off, or for System i® servers, start the system. For instructions on starting the system, see Start the system or logical partition. Then return to this step.
Important: Do not turn on the xSeries or System x server using the power switch. Do not turn on the server using hardware service manager.
  14. Wait for the system to detect that the IXA card is installed and to turn on the server.
Note: Power-on might take several minutes because the IXA card's SPCN firmware might require automatic update to complete.
  15. Verify that the IXA card is functional. For instructions, see Verify the installed part and select the appropriate procedure. Then return to this step.
  16. To complete the installation, go to Windows® environment on iSeries in the iSeries Information Center.
