Learn how to manually remove a tape from a drive when the eject
and emergency eject methods have failed.
Attention: The procedure for manually removing a tape
cartridge could damage your tape cartridge, the tape drive, or both. Use this
procedure only after you have:
- Turned off the power to the tape drive or system to clear any hang conditions.
- Issued an unload SCSI command from your system
command menu, if available.
- Attempted an emergency eject by pressing and holding the unload button
for at least five seconds.
The following procedure describes how to manually remove a data cartridge
from the tape drive. If this procedure is performed, replace the drive, discard
the used media, and use new media.
- Remove the drive from the system, see Media device and
select instructions for the model you are removing the drive from. Then return
to these instructions.
- Remove the mounting rails by removing the four screws near the
lower edge of the drive (two on each side). Access the screws through holes
in the side of each rail.
- Remove the front bezel (the bezel snaps on) by doing the following:
- Use a small screwdriver to depress one of the bezel tabs.
- Pull the bezel down from the top.
- Lift the bezel off the bottom locating tabs.
- Remove the bezel from the unit.
- Remove the top lid of the drive mechanism (4 screws).
- Insert a 1.5 mm hexagonal key or a small Phillips screwdriver into
the aperture on the right side of the drive looking from rear. This gives
you access to the motor worm wheel. Turn the hexagonal key or small screwdriver
counter-clockwise to release the cartridge.
- Reassemble the drive in reverse order.
