Select the optimal disk drive position

Understand what disk drives to fill first, in order, to obtain better performance.

One method of populating this expansion unit is to install disk drives in available disk-drive enclosures from left to right. However, with the correct number and type of disk controllers installed, it is possible to optimize performance and availability by evenly distributing disk drives across disk controllers.

Note: The 5294 and the 8294 consist of two independent expansion units. Installation rules and procedures apply to each expansion unit independently.

Refer to the label on the inside of the front cover and install the disk drives in this order:

  1. First fill all the disk drive positions that are controlled by the first disk-drive controller.
    1. Fill the slot 1s: D31, D36, D46
    2. Fill the slot 2s D32, D37, D47
    3. Fill the slot 3s: D33, D38, D48
    4. Fill the slot 4s: D34, D39, D49
    5. Fill the slot 5s: D35, D40, D50
  2. Your expansion unit requires a second disk-drive controller before you can install disk drives into the following positions. Contact IBM® or an authorized dealer if your expansion unit does not have a second disk-drive controller.

Next fill the slots in this order:

    1. Fill the slot 1s: D01, D11, D21
    2. Fill the slot 2s: D02, D12, D22
    3. Fill the slot 3s: D03, D13, D23
    4. Fill the slot 4s: D04, D14, D24
    5. Fill the slot 5s: D05, D15, D25
  3. Your expansion unit requires a third disk-drive controller before you can install disk drives into the following positions. Contact IBM or an authorized dealer if your expansion unit does not have a third disk-drive controller.

Last fill the slots in this order:

    1. Fill the slot 1s: D06, D16, D26
    2. Fill the slot 2s: D07, D17, D27
    3. Fill the slot 3s: D08, D18, D28
