Install a model 285 or 52x disk-drive backplane

You might need to install a disk-drive backplane in the server. Use the procedure in this section to perform this task.

If your system is managed by the Hardware Management Console (HMC), use the HMC to complete the steps for installing a disk-drive backplane. For instructions, see Install a feature using the Hardware Management Console.

To install the disk-drive backplane, complete the following steps:

Prepare the system

  1. Perform prerequisite tasks as described in Before you begin.
  2. Stop the system. For instructions, see Stop the system or logical partition.
  3. Disconnect the power source from the system.
    Note: This system might be equipped with a second power supply. Before continuing with this procedure, ensure that all power sources to the system have been completely disconnected.
  4. Remove the system unit door or open the rack front door. For instructions on removing the stand-alone system unit door, see Remove the door from the model 285, 52x, 55x, or OpenPower 720.
  5. Place the rack-mounted system unit in the service position. For instructions, see Place the rack-mounted system or expansion unit in the service position.
  6. Remove the service access cover. For instructions, see Remove the service access cover from the model 285, 51x, 52x, 55x, 710, or OpenPower 720.

Install the disk-drive backplane

  1. Remove the fan tray assembly. For instructions, see Remove the model 285 or 52x fan tray assembly. Skip any steps that you have already completed.
  2. Record the slot number and location of each PCI adapter.
  3. Remove and label the PCI adapter cables.
  4. Remove PCI adapters. For instructions, see Remove PCI adapters. Skip any steps that you have already completed.
  5. Remove the PCI adapter dividers. For instructions, see Remove PCI adapter dividers. Skip any steps that you have already completed.
  6. If necessary, remove the disk-drive backplane filler from the slot in the system you want to use, as shown in Figure 1 or Figure 2.

  7. Find the package that contains the new backplane and remove it from its protective package.
  8. Carefully grasp the disk-drive backplane by the top edge.
  9. Insert the disk-drive backplane into the system unit at an angle to the frame hooks and align the hooks with the blue guides on the disk-drive backplane.
  10. Tip the disk-drive backplane forward onto the frame hooks, then firmly press the disk-drive backplane into the connector until you feel the latch tabs lock into place, as shown in Figure 3 or Figure 4.

  11. Replace the PCI adapter dividers. For instructions, see Replace PCI adapter dividers. Skip any steps that you have already completed.
  12. Replace the PCI adapters. For instructions, see Replace PCI adapters. Skip any steps that you have already completed.
  13. If this backplane has a cable connection, install the cable to the backplane and attach the cable to Port 0 of the PCI disk adapter as shown in Figure 5. If you need to install the PCI adapter, see Install a PCI adapter.

  14. Replace the fan tray assembly. For instructions, see Replace the model 285 or 52x fan tray assembly. Skip any steps that you have already completed.
  15. If you are installing one or more disk drives, go to Install a disk drive with the system or logical partition powered off.

Complete the procedure

  1. Install the service access cover. For instructions, see Install the service access cover on the model 285, 51x, 52x, 55x, 710, or OpenPower 720.
  2. Return the rack-mounted system unit to the operating position. For instructions, see Place the rack-mounted system or expansion unit in the operating position.
  3. Replace the system unit door or close the rack front door. For instructions about how to install the stand-alone system unit door, see Install or replace the door on the model 285, 52x, 55x, or OpenPower 720.
  4. Start the system. For instructions, see Start the system or logical partition.
  5. Verify that all of the disk drives connected to the new backplane are functional. For instructions, see Verify the installed part.
