Secure data deletion for a SAS attached disk drive or solid-state drive with RAID format
Use stand-alone diagnostics to complete secure data deletion for SAS attached disk drives or solid-state drives with RAID format.
Before you begin
For system and stand-alone diagnostic requirements, see Secure data deletion for devices by using stand-alone diagnostics.
Procedure
- Ensure that the firmware of the PCIe3 SAS RAID adapter that controls the SAS attached
disk drive or solid-state drive with RAID format has firmware level 19512900, or later. To download
and install the I/O adapter firmware, see Getting I/O adapter and device firmware fixes. Notes:
- If the device is in an IBM® i 7.2 partition, adapter firmware level 19512900 is available in PTF MF67086.
- If the device is in an IBM i 7.3 partition, adapter firmware level 19512900 is available in PTF MF67087.
- If the device is in an IBM i 7.4 partition, adapter firmware level 19512900 is available in PTF MF67089.
- Ensure that the SAS attached disk drive or solid-state drive is not part of a RAID array.
- If the device is in an IBM i partition and if you do not know the location code of the device, go to Getting the location code for a device in an IBM i partition by using the resource name of the device and record the location code of the device.
- Power off the system. For instruction, see Stopping a system.
- Boot the system from stand-alone diagnostics. For information about running stand-alone diagnostics, see Running the stand-alone hardware diagnostics.
- From the Welcome to AIX screen, type 1 to select the terminal that you are using as the system console.
- From the Diagnostics Operating Instructions menu, press Enter to continue.
- From the Function Selection menu, type 3 to select Task Selection.
- From the Define Terminal menu, enter a terminal type. Note: If you are using a remote terminal connection such as PuTTY, use either the VT320 or VT340 terminal emulation.
- If the device is from an IBM i partition, use the location code that you recorded in step 3 and follow the Getting the AIX resource name for a device by using the location code in stand-alone diagnostics procedure to record the pdisk name (disk drive or solid-state drive with RAID format).
- From the Task Selection List, select the RAID Array Manager option.
- From the RAID Array Manager menu, select the IBM SAS Disk Array Manager option.
- From the IBM SAS Disk Array Manager menu, select the Diagnostics and Recovery Options.
- From the Diagnostics and Recovery Options menu, select the Format Physical Disk Media (pdisk) option.
- From the Available Controllers window, select the PCIe3 SAS RAID
adapter that controls the disk drive or solid-state drive for which you want to complete secure data
deletion. Note: If you do not know which PCIe3 SAS RAID adapter controls the disk drive or solid-state drive, select each PCIe3 SAS RAID adapter, one at a time, until the Format Physical Disk Media (pdisk) window displays the pdisk name (disk drive or solid-state drive with RAID format) for the drive that you want to complete secure data deletion.
- From the Format Physical Disk Media (pdisk) window, select the pdisk (disk drive or solid-state drive with RAID format) to format.
- From the Are You Sure window, press Enter to continue with the format operation.
- When the format operation completes successfully, the secure data deletion of the selected disk drive or solid-state drive is complete.
