Replacing the cold plates in the 8335-GTB system

Learn how to replace the cold plates in the water-cooled IBM® Power® System S822LC (8335-GTB) system.

Before you begin

Ensure that you have enough TIMs for the GPUs and processors.
Note: TIMs are included in the cold plate assembly kit. If you need additional TIMs, order the system processor TIM replacement kit. For information about part numbers, see 8335-GTB parts.

Procedure

  1. Ensure that you have the electrostatic discharge (ESD) wrist strap attached. If not, attach it now.
  2. Ensure that each GPU clip is open as shown in Figure 1.

  3. You need to check the TIM heat sink material.
    • For each GPU, the TIM must be replaced.
    • For each processor, inspect the TIM material for visible signs of damage as shown in Figure 2.

If the TIM is damaged, use the supplied scraper to remove the TIM from the cold plate. Using the tweezers, center the new TIM onto the system processor module. The side with the red stripe must be facing up. Align the beveled edges of the TIM and the system processor module.

  4. Lower the cold plate installation carrier straight down onto the system as shown in Figure 3. If you lower at an angle, the carrier catches on the cold plate clips.

  5. One at a time, replace and secure each GPU and processor cold plate. You can begin with replacing the GPUs and processors near the front of the system.
    1. Remove a cold plate from its plastic holder. Lift and pinch the plastic holder at points (A) to remove it from the carrier as shown in Figure 4.

    2. Pivot the cold plate to slide one pin from the holder as shown in Figure 5.

    3. Remove the second cold plate pin from the holder as shown in Figure 6.

    4. Pinch the holder at points (A) and replace it onto the carrier as shown in Figure 7.

    5. Secure the cold plate to the GPU or processor module.
      • For a GPU, swing the retainer over the GPU and tighten the cold plate retainer screw as shown in Figure 8.

      • For a processor module, tighten the cold plate retainer screw with the supplied hex key as shown in Figure 9.

Repeat step 5 for each cold plate.
  6. After all the cold plates are secured to their corresponding GPU or processor module, unfasten the hook-and-loop fastener from the water hoses as shown in Figure 10.

  7. Lift the cold plate installation carrier straight up off the system as shown in Figure 11.

  8. Pass the hoses through the rear wall of the system as shown in Figure 12 and Figure 13.
