Installing the Virtual I/O Server by using the HMC Version 7 Release 7.1, or later

Find instructions for installing the Virtual I/O Server from a CD or DVD device that is attached to the Virtual I/O Server (VIOS) logical partition by using the Hardware Management Console (HMC) Version 7 Release 7.1.0, or later.

For more information about activating and installing the Virtual I/O Server (VIOS) when the HMC is at version 8.7.0, or later, see Activating Virtual I/O Servers.

Before you start, ensure that you meet the following requirements:

To install the VIOS from CD or DVD, complete the following steps from the HMC graphical interface:

  1. Activate the VIOS logical partition by using the HMC Version 7 (or later) or HMC Version 6 (or earlier):
    • Activate the VIOS by using the HMC Version 7 or later:
      1. Insert the VIOS CD or DVD into the VIOS logical partition.
      2. In the HMC navigation area, expand Systems Management > Servers.
      3. Select the server on which the VIOS logical partition is located.
      4. In the contents area, select the VIOS logical partition.
      5. Click Tasks > Operations > Activate. The Activate Partition menu opens with a selection of logical partition profiles. Ensure that the correct profile is highlighted.
      6. Select Open a terminal window or console session to open a virtual terminal (vterm) window.
      7. Click Advanced to open the Advanced Options menu.
      8. For the boot mode, select SMS.
      9. Click OK to close the Advanced Options menu.
      10. Click OK. A virtual terminal window opens for the logical partition.
    • Activate the VIOS by using the HMC Version 6 or earlier:
      1. Insert the VIOS CD or DVD into the VIOS logical partition.
      2. On the HMC, right-click the logical partition to open the menu.
      3. Click Activate. The Activate Partition menu opens with a selection of logical partition profiles. Ensure that the correct profile is highlighted.
      4. Select Open a terminal window or console session to open a virtual terminal (vterm) window.
      5. Click Advanced to open the Advanced Options menu.
      6. For the boot mode, select SMS.
      7. Click OK to close the Advanced Options menu.
      8. Click OK. A virtual terminal window opens for the logical partition.
  2. Select the boot device:
    1. Select Select Boot Options and press Enter.
    2. Select Select Install/Boot Device and press Enter.
    3. Select Select 1st Boot Device and press Enter.
    4. Select CD/DVD and press Enter.
    5. Select the media type that corresponds to the optical device and press Enter.
    6. Select the device number that corresponds to the optical device and press Enter.
    7. Set the boot sequence to configure the first boot device. The optical device is now the first device in the Current Boot Sequence list.
    8. Exit the SMS menu by pressing the X key, and confirm that you want to exit SMS.
  3. Install the VIOS:
    1. Select the console you want and press Enter.
    2. Select a language for the BOS menus and press Enter.
    3. Select Start Install Now with Default Settings and press Enter. Select Change/Show Installation Settings and Install to change the installation and system settings.
    4. Select Continue with Install. The system will reboot after the installation is complete.
