Work with device parity protection

Learn about how to work with device parity protection. Device parity protection is a data redundancy feature that is available on some storage media units.

Select this option to perform the system functions that handle device parity protection on the system. It is maintained across all the units that are within the parity set. If a disk unit fails, the units within the set handle the functions for the failed unit. This type of protection can improve system availability and reduce the possibility of data loss. The following options are available:
Display device parity status
Select this option to show the status of disk unit subsystems that have device parity protection.
Start device parity protection
Use this option to begin the process of protecting data on the system. This option includes the following options:
  • Work with device parity protection
  • Include unit in device parity protection
  • Start device parity protection - RAID 5
  • Start device parity protection - RAID 6
  • Start device parity protection - RAID 10*
  • Start device parity protection - RAID 5 with hot spare
  • Start device parity protection - RAID 6 with hot spare
  • Start device parity protection - RAID 10 with hot spare*
  • Select parity optimization
  • Start hot spare
  • Stop hot spare

*RAID 10 is supported on IBM® i Version 7.2 or later.

Stop device parity protection
Use this option to end device parity protection.
Include unit in device parity protection
Use this option to add an unprotected disk unit to an existing parity set.
Exclude unit in device parity protection
Use this option to remove a disk unit from a parity set.
Select parity optimization
Use this option to optimize parity.
