Replacing the 8248-L4T, 8408-E8D, or 9109-RMD system processor assembly

Learn how to replace the system processor assembly that is part of a service action.

To complete this procedure, you must have already completed the removal procedure. For instructions, see Removing the 8248-L4T, 8408-E8D, or 9109-RMD system processor assembly.

If your system is managed by the Hardware Management Console (HMC), use the HMC to replace a system processor assembly. For instructions, see Replacing a part by using the HMC.

If you do not have an HMC, complete the following steps to replace the system processor assembly:

Attention:
  • Attach a wrist strap to an unpainted metal surface of your hardware to prevent electrostatic discharge from damaging your hardware.
  • When using a wrist strap, follow all electrical safety procedures. A wrist strap is for static control. It does not increase or decrease your risk of receiving electric shock when using or working on electrical equipment.
  • If you do not have a wrist strap before removing the product from ESD packaging and installing or replacing hardware, touch an unpainted metal surface of the system for a minimum of 5 seconds.
  1. Install the system processor modules from the original system processor assembly in the replacement system processor assembly. Use the location that is recorded for each system processor module in the removing the system processor assembly procedure. For instructions, see Replacing the 8248-L4T, 8408-E8D, or 9109-RMD system processor modules.
Attention: Ensure that the system processor modules removed from the original system processor assembly are installed into the same locations in the replacement system processor assembly.
  2. Install the processor voltage regulator modules from the original system processor assembly in the replacement system processor assembly. Use the location that is recorded for each processor voltage regulator module in the removing the system processor assembly procedure. For instructions, see Replacing the 8248-L4T, 8408-E8D, or 9109-RMD voltage regulator module.
Attention: Ensure that the processor voltage regulator modules removed from the original system processor assembly are installed into the same locations in the replacement system processor assembly.
  3. Install the memory voltage regulator module from the original system processor assembly in the replacement system processor assembly. For instructions, see Replacing the 8248-L4T, 8408-E8D, or 9109-RMD memory voltage regulator module.
  4. Install the memory risers from the original system processor assembly in the replacement system processor assembly. Use the location that is recorded for each memory riser in the removing the system processor assembly procedure. For instructions, see Replacing memory risers for the 8248-L4T, 8408-E8D, or 9109-RMD.
Attention: Ensure that the memory risers removed from the original system processor assembly are installed into the same locations in the replacement system processor assembly.
  5. Install the thermal power management device (TPMD) card from the original system processor assembly in the replacement system processor assembly. For instructions, see Replacing the 8248-L4T, 8408-E8D, or 9109-RMD TPMD card.
  6. Slide both rails out of the enclosure until the slide release buttons (one on each side) lock into place (A). See Figure 1.
Figure 1. Sliding out the system processor assembly rails:

  7. Install the system processor assembly:
    1. Remove any connector covers at the rear of the replacement system processor assembly, if present.
    2. With the rails extended and locked in position, and two people (one person on each side of the system processor assembly), lift the system processor assembly by using the handles on each side, and align and place the six card pins (three on each side) with their respective notch on the rails.
Attention: The system processor assembly weighs 20.4 kg (45 lb). Two people are required to replace the system processor assembly. Use caution when lifting and sliding the assembly into the enclosure.
    3. With the system processor assembly secured on the rails, lift the slide release buttons (one on each side) to unlock the rails (B). See Figure 2.
    4. By using the lower handles, slide the system processor assembly completely into the enclosure.

  8. Complete installing the system processor assembly:
    1. Ensure that the handles (C) are in the unlocked position. See Figure 3.
    2. Rotate the handles (C) up and push toward the enclosure until they lock into place.
    3. By using a slotted screwdriver, tighten both the captive screws (D), if present.
Note: Do not overtighten the captive screws. Tighten until each screw is flush with the surface.

  9. Place the system into the operating position. For instructions, see Placing the rack-mounted 8248-L4T, 8408-E8D, or 9109-RMD system into the operating position.
  10. Replace the front covers. For instructions, see Installing the front cover on the 8248-L4T, 8408-E8D, or 9109-RMD.
  11. Connect both the power cords.
  12. Go to Verifying a repair.
