Removing a PCIe adapter from the 8001-12C or 8005-12N system

Learn how to remove a PCIe adapter from the IBM® Power® System S821LC (8001-12C) or the IBM CS821 (8005-12N) system.

Before you begin

Power off the system and place it in the service position. For instructions, see Preparing the 8001-12C or 8005-12N system to remove and replace internal parts.

Procedure

  1. Attach the electrostatic discharge (ESD) wrist strap.
    Attention:
    • Attach an electrostatic discharge (ESD) wrist strap to the front ESD jack, to the rear ESD jack, or to an unpainted metal surface of your hardware to prevent the electrostatic discharge from damaging your hardware.
    • When you use an ESD wrist strap, follow all electrical safety procedures. An ESD wrist strap is used for static control. It does not increase or decrease your risk of receiving electric shock when using or working on electrical equipment.
    • If you do not have an ESD wrist strap, just prior to removing the product from ESD packaging and installing or replacing hardware, touch an unpainted metal surface of the system for a minimum of 5 seconds.
  2. An adapter can share a PCIe riser card with other adapters. Label and remove any cables and plugs that extend out of the adapters. See Figure 1.
Figure 1. 8001-12C PCIe adapter positions
    8001-12C PCIe adapter positions
    Position Step
    1 (UIO Network) 4
    2 (UIO Slot1) 3
    3, 4, 5 (PLX Slot1, WIO Slot1, WIO Slot2) 5
  3. If you are working with a PCIe adapter in positions 2, if the adapter has a special tailstock support, unscrew the tailstock from the support. Remove the adapter from the PCIe riser.
  4. If you are working with the PCIe riser card in position 1, do the following steps:
    1. If a PCIe adapter is in position 2, label and remove that adapter. Set it on an ESD mat for future replacement.
    2. Remove the two screws that secure the PCIe riser card to the chassis as shown in Figure 2.
    3. Lift the PCIe adapter riser at points (A) and (B) from the system backplane.

  5. If the PCIe adapter to remove is in positions 3, 4, or 5, you must remove the PCIe cage and riser.
    1. Remove the PCIe riser as shown in Figure 3.
      1. Retract the retaining pins (A) so that the arrows on the tabs point to the system.
      2. Lift the PCIe riser from the system.

    2. If you are removing a storage drive adapter, label and disconnect the signal cables from the adapter.
    3. If the riser contains a GPU, remove the power cable (A) from the system backplane as shown in Figure 4. Using your thumb, press the release latch on the connector to remove the cable.

    4. Place the PCIe cage upside down on an ESD surface.
  6. Remove the adapter to be replaced from the riser as shown in Figure 5.
    1. Remove the screw that secures the PCIe adapter to the PCIe cage.
    2. Remove the PCIe adapter from the riser.
