The classic fast food transformation story is like ten years ago at Taco Bell. They thought delivering value to customers was fresh and hot so workers grated cheese etc on the spot. A real RYO technology solution. They met the perceived need for fresh and hot but customers were not so happy. One good study later, they realized customer value for fast food was really fast and accurate (right content in the paper bag "packet") So they pre-grated all the cheeze etc offsite and shipped it in (off-shored it? relatively yes but still in USA) and the restaurant was just assemble and heat. So it smacks of outsourcing and componentizing with a final ESB connection of the salsa, meat and cheese elements. A final emphasis on customer service to the nth degree and they grew like crazy in the market in $$$, profit and customer sat. go figger.
