Once again before pointing someone to info on 'how' to become an IT Architect, I'd first turn it around and ask them 'why' they want to be an IT Architect. It's been my experience that many times people want to become architects because they think it's in some ways better than being "just" a developer/admin/tester/whatever.

However, it was my experience that although I got into architecture as a way "up and out" of development, after two years I got really restless to get back to the fun of creating new software directly.
That being said, the move to architecture was a good two-year job which gave me a broader picture on the software lifecycle and ultimately made me a better developer when I decided to go back to that.
