What is the WebSphere Liberty Profile and why is it so powerful? As Simon Maple, Technical Evangelist for WebSphere points out, the Liberty Profile can be used for development and small-scale applications, but equally can be employed by as a profile in a highly scalable, high-availability WebSphere Application Server environment.
Just how small can these applications be? Simon showcases a demo of the Liberty Profile and the Really Small Message Broker (RSMB) running on the credit-card sized Raspberry Pi used to control lighting and a fountain in a home 50 miles away. More than just the controls, the application also provides a web interface showing the status of the connected home appliances and outputs a dashboard monitoring energy consumption.
IBM and the Raspberry Pi team are working together to produce a Java web development environment to help people learn web development through the Liberty Profile. When people download the software for the Raspberry Pi they will have a series of tutorials and demos that will guide you through the steps involved.
