At the Wireless Enterprise Symposium earlier today, IBM announced in partnership with Research In Motion support for the new BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.0.
Yes, I'm a BlackBerry Bold carrier and I'm completely biased. I also carry an iPod Touch when traveling, but when it means staying in touch with the office (my office being virtually the entire globe), ain't nothin' says connected like my BlackBerry (Search "Blackberry" for all previous posts, including the ones where I mentioned why I went with a BlackBerry upgrade instead of an iPhone switch).
The BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.0 (BES being the thing that makes email, calendaring, etc. work in the enterprise) is soon expected to allow users to read documents and even securely blog using the IBM Lotus Symphony word processing client, as well as use the BlackBerry Client for Lotus Sametime instant messaging and for Lotus Connections.
The new BlackBerry Client for Lotus Sametime will also extend its real-time collaboration capabilities, allowing for Sametime IM, presence awareness, contacts, broadcasts, file tranfer, click-to-call, and all the other cool stuff we all use Lotus Sametime to do on our desktop client.
You'll also be able to use the VOIP capability via the new BlackBerry Client for Sametime.
It was also announced that LotusLive Meetings will also soon be supported via BlackBerry smartphones, allowing for an integrated audio and Web conferencing experience from both the BlackBerry Bold and Blackberry Storm smartphones.
The open beta program for this capability is expected to start in June.
Keep an eye on LotusLive for more details.
