The Power To Be Virtual

During my recent meetings in Europe, the subject has logically come up as to the areas of the market where companies are investing in IT and software in this tightened spending environment.
Virtualization seems to continue thematically to be one of those areas, which makes sense to me: Virttualization essentially means companies can do more with less.
But good virtualization requires good management software, and should also provide clear upgrade paths to new technology.
By way of example, IBM has a new line of microprocessors on the way, "POWER7," which will power our next-generation servers.
To help manage virtualization for these systems, we announced only yesterday some new management software, VMControl.
VMControl will be part of the IBM Systems Director family of software for the management of IBM servers, storage, and networking, and also provides automatic discovery, monitoring, and updates for both physical and virtual resources.
The new software will also help with the maintenance, performance tuning, and availability of servers.

ADDENDUM: This just in from the New York Times "Bits" blog about the expected on-time arrival of the POWER7 line mentioned above.
