It's that time of year.
No, not to eat more (although it's that time, too).
No, it's time for a look at our disturbed, global collective intelligence via the Google Zeitgeist.
As Google puts it, "it's time to look at the big events, memorable moments, and emerging trends that captivated us in 2008."
It's amazing what you can learn (or not) when you examine a few billion search results from around the globe.
The fastest rising searches around the world are as follows:
1. sarah palin
Number 1 just makes me laugh.
Number 2 makes me want to go back to Beijing and hopefully this time not be in an earthquake and have a hard time at that glorious airport.
Number 3 makes me wonder what's so difficult about typing in "www.facebook.com"
Number 4 makes me want to go back to Madrid and see my IBM colleagues there and have another great dinner at Teatriz.
Number 5 just makes me sad. Very sad.
Number 6 makes me hopeful, even in spite of everything going on in the world.
Number 7 makes me want to go back to Eastern Europe and this time see my IBM friends in Poland.
Number 8 makes me want to stop back by Munich on the way back and this time visit the biergarten.
Number 9 makes me smile thinking about Spain's great victory and hanging out in a cool pizza joint off the Plaza Colon for the Spain/Russia match and watching everybody go just absolutely crazy over the win that put Spain back in the Euro 2008 finals for the first time in now I can't even remember how many years.
And number 10...well, that one just makes me glad I don't have any kids.
So, here's to the Google Zeitgeist, global style.
May you have many, many returns...
