I will continue to have to have Browser Wars
but I will no longer have "presentation" tool wars. I'm now using a complete suite of office productivity software for creating, editing, and sharing word processing documents, spreadsheets, and presentations available for free download now on developerWorks...and who doesn't like the words free and no charge?
What is it I am using?
Will I totally abandon Microsoft Office? Don't know about that 100% ..at least, though, finally, free tools and freedom of choice!

So the story goes that "Global Audience Spends Two Hours More a Month on Social Networks than Last Year" : On average, global web users across 10 countries spent roughly five and a half hours on social networks in February 2010, up more than two hours from the same time last year. While the U.S. boasts the largest unique social networking audience, Italian and Australian web surfers led the way for average time on site with more than six hours each in February.
I am just not sure I like that "two MORE hours" ....perhaps it is included in my normal hours as I just can't see how there are any more hours in the day....or did I miss something while I was spending all my expert time in meetings, conference calls, doing e-mail and working? Maybe it is a minute here and a minute there....that I can handle. I visit many social networks on a regular basis yet I never stay too long. Cumulative though of all my minutes... ok.....I've now talked my way into 2 more than last year....as afterall....last year at this time we didn't have My developerWorks!!!

Now that is a headline.....it actually is the name of book by Lisa Scottoline and it made me laugh as well as pick up the book.
It made me think about article titles of content on developerWorks. One of the reasons many of us come to developerWorks is the honest, straightforward and, dare I say, boring article titles.
Yet are they really boring?
Not boring....direct....to the point....and easily found when hunting for information. Fancy titles may catch your attention or not....what is most important is the content.
I didn't attend Lotusphere this year...and I was very sad. To make me happy, I found
Lotusphere is also coming to me...yes to me as that is indeed how I like to view it. There are one day in person events : Lotusphere Comes to You happening all across the globe plus the Lotusphere Virtual Experience Both available to me at no charge other than my time.
Now for the debate....do I do the in-person (and have to get out of my home office attire) where I can meet and talk to Lotus enthusiasts and experts or do I attend the Virtual Experience (same content, just different attire requirements on me). Decisions...decisions... or ... I do I attend both?

As I mentioned in a previous blog ... .free software is a good thing
But sometimes you want more....so I found more about XPages
Steve Castledine has just created a new framework that will allow developers to quickly create a new XPage application using OneUI. It gives you an option of a 2 or 3 column layout, this could prove very useful when you want to quickly see the power of XPages. It has the following key features.
Easy out of the box layout so you can start building your XPage application
Has 2 or 3 column layouts simply by dragging the appropriate custom control onto your XPage
Login and Search functionality
Tab and Menu item highlighting
Handles browser languages, so if you add the appropriate property file for that language XPages will use it automatically
Uses standard css shipped with XPages, however also contains themes for new v2.1 of OneUItogether with additional themes metal, gold, red, green
Automatic Sidebar, links box, footers, tab menus custom controls built in. Others coming soon.

Granted nothing in life it "truly" free.....but close enough. Now available on developerWorks...the fully loaded code...not the trial code....check it out at IBM Lotus Domino Designer code ....all you have to do is give a little information as you normally do on a download and the code is yours....hence the not "truly" free. Shall we call it no-charge, readily available, no monetary excchange or just call it GREAT!!.

Wouldn't any person/group work smarter if they were better connected? Is it the future of how we will work?
My developerWorks is part of what allows me to work smarter....it is the future and it is here today.
Sacha Chua, a relatively new member of IBM, gives a great example of why social networks matter. Le'ts make her enthusiasm contagious:
What makes you work smarter? What about in the future?

What do Bubbles, Psycho, Dilbert and Runnable have to do with "technical"? They are used to describe and inform ..and let's face it....entertain....which is the best way to learn.
Check out e-mail is soooooooo last week: to learn about Bubbles and Psycho ...and the benefits of Lotus Connections 2.5..... ( no fears...for those of us on My developerWorks as the team continues to enhance and upgrade we should see Lotus Connections 2.5 features arriving for us to use ....YIPPEEE - is that another technical workd?)
and what about Dilbert? Always a good way to make a point, check out Anticipating Problems
and then there is runnable.....I just like the word....say it a few times and you'll see why...runnable runnable runnable... ..now wasn't that fun? On the serious note: ever taken a java core on a Java 5 SDK and wondered why threads that should be marked as Runnable are showing up as Condition Wait? If so...check out this solution.
