Some time back I started a blog entry for wish list and feature requests for My dW. Its grown big now and I find it hard to keep that entry up to date. Also, I am more than sure that there are very good ideas on each of your head to make My dW better place. After all its "OURS". Inspired by some cool activity templates and activities, thought why not start this myself and get helping hand by all of you who is reading my blog entry.
I have created this activity and added few authors to the same. I am in the process of moving my ideas//requests to the activity and for sure I will take some time. Mean while if you have got an idea and want to contribute do connect with me and I will add you as author for sure !
"Man is a social animal" is what we all learnt in our school days.. "Woman also is" is what I have to add :)
We IT professional because of our work have been socially challenged and are more closer to our computers. But our crave for being social hasn’t stopped and hence Social Networks are being important aspects of life today.
This is how I started my talk at Infosysy Bangalore @ MydW Launch.
So I was talking about social networks. As humans its not enough that we just social but we do have varied interests and goals in life. So naturally we search for like minded people to network with to get something done.
Lets take an example of blood donation. How many of you have donated blood? How many of you have arranged for blood donation
In our apartment we do regular blood donation and we do have set of people who drive this. We have a community which has set of people donating the blood, arranging for blood camps etc. Basically communities are platforms to bring like minded people together with some vision. Just forming a community isn't enough. Only if people participate and passionate about the vision then the community sees success.
As a software professional we all have varied goals in our professional life. As a developer I want to learn a new technology. I want to get mentored. I want to see if there are existing projects which I could see and learn from that As an expert I may wnat to help some one with his problems, answer his queries and mentor. As a professional I want to expand my network and be known not only in my team but outside as well and increase my visibility.
So communities give me the opportunities to learn, discover , collaborate and connect with people.
This was the way I was trying to reach out to people to explain the importance of community. I was speaking as an Evangelist @ Infy.
The slot was only for 30 minutes. Before I went there I was wondering what will I talk, how will explain them what communities meant, what would they benefit so on and so forth ...My friend Manoj knowing me for 5 years now said - 30 minutes isn't enough for you Suma for the length that you speak. I am bit talkative .. OK I confess . not a BIT but a GIGA BYTE talkative :) ...Thanks Manoj. You were right ...:)
I enjoyed that session thoroughly ..I saw people tuning into my thoughts nodding their heads agreeing to the points that I was mentioning. There weren't much people, Some 20 odd number was the crowd strength.. but they were able to connect to me. There were some interesting questions -
Why would IBM want to do this?
Would this not affect its proprietary products?
What would IBM gain out of it...
Don't we want to give back to the society at some point in time? I always have this feeling of doing my bit to the society. As individuals if we feel this way, an organization which is made out of such people ...would it not feel the same way --- Isn't it time to give back some thing to society, community ?? After all community is not about ONE but MANY.
I am sure some atleast agreed to this in that crowd ...
Thank you dW for giving that wonderful opprtunity.
