175 million members. 200+ countries. 19 languages. These are but a few examples of LinkedIn’s presence around the world, and it would behoove anyone to list any more relevant statistics about the social media platform. What is it about this web site that attracts so many people, and why did it become so successful? Is it the interactive interface? Is it the easy readability and “Facebook-esque” features? Or maybe it has something to do with the ability to customize one’s own profile and connect with any relevant individual in your networks. Whatever the reasons may be, LinkedIn has become a phenomenally important tool for recruits, employers, and companies. Individuals around the world are looking to find and expand their network, access job opportunities, and simply stay in touch with news. The usage varies between different parties with different goals, so I have divided up the three major types of participants and have created explanations for their use of this social networking site.
LinkedIn for Recruits
Recruits are the first party that comes to mind when involving LinkedIn. Most individuals create their own customized profiles for exposure to recruiters, companies, and any relevant recruiting authorities. One can add different sections about their professional experience as well as skill sets, and LinkedIn hosts simple ways to build your “online resume” (You can literally import your resume to your profile). Therefore, recruits, often college students, will construct their own profiles on this website for these advantages.
Another added benefit to having
your own LinkedIn profile is your ability to stay well connected with
employers. You are not only getting exposure to large companies looking to
recruit you, but you are also staying in touch with company news and reports.
Most businesses that truly care about their exposure and popularity will
continually update their profiles and post relevant news in order to stay in
touch with consumers. Recruits can utilize these updates to stay in touch with
the firm and hopefully use that information to recruit even better.
Recruits also receive high visibility; a 100% complete LinkedIn profile “will receive maximum exposure when it comes to being indexed… and LinkedIn provide[s] so much exposure that, in many cases, when a name search is performed, it will normally come up in the first SERP’s” (Virtual Social Media). In this way, recruits can stay connected with the individuals in their network, know who is employed where, and endlessly expand their virtual professional network by “connecting” with other individuals in that same network. Other opportunities in this site include being a part of groups and leaving and receiving recommendations from others, further enhancing your social networking experience and creating an ideal profile.
LinkedIn for Employers
Having access to online platforms in order to find future employees is not a new concept in this day and age. Employers, more often than not, use and access these new channels of recruiting for three main reasons.
The first reason is to find potential employees and recruit them to their firm. As I have stated in my previous post, I have gotten several offers for job interviews through my LinkedIn profile, and it is no surprise that recruiters are gaining more ground by searching for potential employees online, such as through LinkedIn and various other social networking portals.
The second reason is to screen recruits during the recruitment process. Recruiters can have access to your professional “online resume” through LinkedIn, and since the level of description can be much more easily accessed, employers find this type of platform extremely useful in discovering talent best suited for the currently open positions at their respective companies. Employers can also try to pry into future employees’ personal life and gain insight on their personal behaviors, which has become another motive for them to create and host LinkedIn profiles.
The third and final major reason is to promote their firm. This thought will tie into our next subtopic, but I will briefly touch on it from the employer’s point of view. Employers want to attract the best talent to their companies, so they need to provide an excellent representation of their firms. LinkedIn, therefore, becomes a surefire medium in doing just that.
LinkedIn for Companies
If you look on the top bar of the website, there is a “Companies” tab that you can click to find and subscribe to your favorite companies. To continue the insight from the subtopic above, companies tailor their message on LinkedIn to their advantage and are able to further their brand name and image by showcasing their organization, philosophies, and key facts. Individual company profiles become a new key conduit for any company’s flow of information to the general public, and the goal is to increase the firm’s popularity.
You are also able to see who in your network has or is working at the firm, which plays to both the firm and the recruits’ benefit. Finding different but related links between the company and everyone else is one key strategy to making someone feel like they have an attachment to the firm.
Each of these three types of participants partakes in a series of different actions and goals through this website, but they are all interrelated. I highly recommend recruits to look for job opportunities by connecting with companies and employers, as well as keep up to date with the latest news from subscribing to their favorite organizations. If you are an employer who is looking for top talent to fill jobs at their workplaces, I suggest that you regularly use LinkedIn as a hub to connect with recruits like college students. Finally, I would advocate firms to leverage this new medium of communication to showcase their companies through company profiles and increase brand image.
Overall, LinkedIn has had a massive impact on how the recruiting process takes place in today’s society, and I encourage each and every one of you to leverage the website to your advantage, whether you are a recruit, employer, or representative of a company looking to promote brand image.
