Hans Rey. Some time ago, I wrote a blog entry linking to a breathtaking photo that I saw on Digg. I had no idea if it was real or not, and used it to wax humorous. Reader Paul cleared it all up today. The photo is real, and there are many more on this amazing page. Here's another sample.
I do not know Hans, but where it is all too easy to make fun of such fearlessness, I now find myself in a place of respect and admiration. I will never be on a cliff like that riding a mountain bike, but the fearlessness Hans and friend demonstrate here is an inspiring lesson I am today more receptive to. I believe we all have enormous capacity for demonstrating dominion, and not over each other, but over the things that restrict us, which are fundamentally mental. And in a way, can't they all be summed up as fear? Who knows how far we can go and what things we can do, if we only gain dominion over the fear which says we cannot. Of course, wisdom is an essential fellow traveler with fearlessness in order to achieve real dominion. So while Hans Rey is ready for mountainbiking on a high cliff, I will stick with putting up holiday lights on my front yard tree, for now ...
