Dassault and IBM renew partnership in Long Term Data Preservation of Product Lifecycle Management Information
rodney.sassaman 100000NES7 Tags:  discrete_manufacturing psf aerospace ltdp dassault 1,047 Views
The aerospace and defense industries face unique challenges and regulatory requirements for the long-term preservation of the product data they create for design, testing and manufacturing. It’s not as easy as simply making a paper copy of the data and filing it, especially with the explosion of 3-D modeling in these industries. Companies must find a way to not only archive the bits of data for the future but also make those bits useful supported by an auditing process that will ensure the data is compliant with what you archived—preserving knowledge, not simply information. The long-term data preservation solution for aerospace and defense from IBM and Dassault Systèmes, is based on both companies’ technologies including the IBM®Digital Information Archiving System for ProductLifecycle Management (PLM). This combination of processes, software and hardware helps aerospace and defense companies preserve the understandability and usability of complex interrelated objects, even when tec-nologies for computer hardware, operating systems, data management products and applications become obsolete.
Considering the complexity and project scope of creating aircraft, satellites, engines, and other aerospace and defense goods, it is becoming increasingly difficult to preserve design, testing and manufacturing data. That data must remain usable in a digital format for the entire life of the product, which is likely several decades. The long-term data preservation solution helps protect the integrity of your data so it can be retained throughout long lifecycles. And, because the solution isolates the data from the inevitable obsolescence of your IT systems, it helps preserve the knowledge contained within the data for your products’ objects.
The volume of data associated with the design and manufacture of aircraft, satellites and other aerospace and defense products is growing exponentially. In the past, data preservation solutions involved translating digital data to paper format for physical storage. With the growth in 3-D design capabilities, datasets now have advanced to make such solutions not only impractical, but also cost prohibitive. This long-term data preservation solution allows you to deploy an in-house data preservation management process that maintains the digital value chain throughout the entire product lifecycle—from concept to retirement. A third-party archiver is used as a cost-effective audit source to help guarantee integrity over the typical 70 to 100 year life of many aircraft designs today. The main archive data is held in-house.
As the usefulness of 3-D product design advances, the need to preserve and manage these large, complex datasets also grows. And no type of entity is more interested in this aspect than product certification agencies such as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). Recently, a data preservation solution from IBM and Dassault Systèmes was instrumental in helping a large European aircraft manufacturer become the first to receive both EASA and FAA approval based solely on 3-D data throughout the intricate, years-long completion process of an aircraft.By providing a consistent data preservation infrastructure, IBM can address your archives’ check, backup, recoveries and access in a highly optimized way. This not only helps you meet regulatory requirements but can also mitigate corporate risk and reduce operations costs.
Benefit from our partnership with Dassault Systèmes
As a world leader in 3-D and PLM solutions, Dassault Systèmes offers end-to-end innovation and an advanced software portfolio. When combined with proven IBM workload-optimized systems and both partners’ services organizations, the pairing helps enable breakthrough advances in long-term data preservation. This solution is based on technology from Dassault Systèmes specifically developed and designed to deliver improved cohe-ence and better data management. In fact, the converters for
data geometry files developed by Dassault Systèmes (based on the Standard for the Exchange of Product Model Data or STEP) provide a long-term strategy for future usability of design data. The generation of archiving is tailored by administrative capabilities such as monitoring and validation of extracted data. When archived data is re-used later, auditing mechanisms provide the capability to review aircraft digital data.As an IBM Business Partner, Dassault Systèmes has been working together closely with IBM serving thousands of clients over the past 30 years. Built on the industry expertise from both companies, this collaboration provides know-how in the archiving process and secures delivery of tailored solutions foreach customer case.
Rely on IBM for data preservation expertise
IBM has long been active in a variety of global data infrastructure, storage and preservation initiatives, including PLANETS,CASPAR, IMPACT and others. We have gained extensive experience through working groups in Europe, as well as through funded projects in the United States. With the formulation of the Open Archival Information System (OAIS) Reference Model and the work done by theLong Term Archiving and Retrieval (LOTAR) standards group, the aerospace and defense industries have created a frameworkfor long-term design data archiving solutions. OAIS-compliant solutions, such as the long-term data preservation solution from IBM and Dassault Systèmes, can allow you to better control the
cost of maintaining traditional product lifecycle management applications, while still meeting the legal requirements associated with the design data for your products.
Help preserve the past for tomorrow
Your company’s aircraft, satellites, engines and other aerospace and defense products will likely be in use for decades to come.It is important to ensure that product knowledge is extended to match your products’ lifecycle. With this long-term data preservation solution, you can remain confident about the integrity of your product data. And regardless of hardware or software changes, crucial product data can be preserved and remainusable with this solution.
