One of the key value propositions of IBM Connections Portlets is that they are developed using a very state-of-art Web Experience Factory tool (WEF). The key differentiating value it offers is very easy and quick customization capabilities.
Web Experience Factory follows a model-driven development paradigm where business users develop using basic building blocks called builders (in WEF terminology). The builders offer wizard like interface which users need to populate and the tool takes care to generate the backend, JEE compliant code.
We release the source code of the portlets so business partners and customers worldwide can import the code in their WEF environment. As we know in any customer deployment, customization of applications to suit their environments becomes critical. The customizations can be very varied - from theme changes, to addition / removal of new functionalities , plugging to new backend data sources to fetch any related contextual information. All these customozations take a quick time with WEF as it involves adding / removing new builders from WEF and get the work done. WEF has several builders which enable users to hook into their backend data sources like db2, FileNet, Sharepoint, SAP, PeopleSoft, Siebel.
