Thomson launches SpursEngine graphics card: Thomson's Firecoder Blu graphics card, the second one based on the Toshiba SpursEngine chip (half as many cores as its base, the Cell/B.E. processor), is now available. It contains a hardware encoder and decoder for MPEG2 and MPEG4 AVC/H.264 video and is designed to be used as a co-processor in a PC for such compute-intensive work as real-time high-definition graphics processing. According to the company, it can transcode AVCHD, a common format used in consumer HD camcorders, to and from MPEG2 at up to five times faster than real time.
