Premier Emotions League: title fight Twitter visualization in R

Below we present use case of how IBM Netezza 1000 and statistical package R may be used for exploration of data from social media.
In this example we use short text messages from Twitter that refer to two teams that were fighting for the champion title in Premier League, namely, Manchester United and Manchester City. Tweets were uploaded to the IBM Netezza 1000 database and then sentiment analysis and data aggregation was done in R that is embedded in the database.
Below we present final visualization and its description:
Final round of English premier league and especially title race brought many twitter followers and gave incredible emotions as we can see from tweets.
There were three interesting matches. Every game result was significant:
Man City – QPR:
Man Utd made first step on the English title that afternoon and Wayne Rooney scored a goal, which gave his side the lead, both in the game and the league table, at that moment.
Man City caught up with his arch rivals on 39th minute thanks to score of Zabaleta.
Nothing had changed at the top of the table until the half-time whistle blew. But at the bottom where was a major shift. QPR at that time was relegated because Bolton was winning with Stoke City.
The second half started with a goal scored by QPR team. After this an accident resulted in a red card for one of the QPR players. Then, every supporter of Man City believed that 10 men QPR side is doomed to lose the game. But QPR scored another goal ! That ruined Man City fans dream of winning a Premier League title.
The end of the game was incredibly dramatic and full of emotions. Man U was controlling the game and waiting for final whistle, which was going to give them the crown.
City side was trying to change the score, but every effort seemed like hitting the brick wall. It was 90th minute when QPR had got the news that they are staying in Premier league for the next season because their bottom table rivals drew their game and are relegated. Then, there was only the title fight between two teams from Manchester.
It was a dramatic nail biting finish of football Premier League season.
When the game was coming to its end and some of the supporters were leaving the stadium in tears an equalizer came by the Citizens scored by Edin Dzeko. It gave a hope for Man City side. After a while, Man Utd finished their match and were just waiting for the final result of the City game. In the 4th minute of extra time Sergio Aguero scored the winning goal.
The crowd was delighted and shortly after the final whistle people run on the pitch celebrating with home players.
According to many commentators this was the most dramatic conclusion to a season in Premier League history.
Tweets analysis with IBM Netezza 1000:
15:00 At the early beginning of the game, there was a lull before the storm, just a few tweets.
15:20 Football fans started expressing their emotions with a goal of Wayne Rooney for Man Utd.
It gave Man Utd supporters a boost of optimism, which resulted in a jump to about 2000 tweets per minute. The news about red story seemed to be very popular but after the goal curve collapsed.
Then the Man Utd curve decreased and was just above City curve, which was still at the same level. The sentiment curves acted as tweets curves.
15:39 The response of City side came in 39 minute of the game and that caused a little grow of their supporters sentiment and drop in Utd charts.
After Man City goal Man Utd supporters seemed to lose their faith in the chances for the title.
15:50 The half time result of Stoke – Bolton game might have caused jump of united curves as they might believe that QPR have to fight for Premier League survival.
In the second half City got two hits splitted by red card to QPR, which resulted in falls in charts.
16:10 As we may see from sentiment chart the red card after the goal have boosted the Citizens fans energy and their faiths for the title. The result 2-1 for QPR was still ruining chances for title.
16:21 The second goal killed the hope of City supporters, and chart sentiment dropped dramatically. On the contrary, the Citizens arch rival fans were pleased and the sentiment chart grew.
16:52 Even the graphs show incredible drama of the title race. City and Utd supporters travelled from one end of the emotional scale to the other.
With the game coming to an end, most of the city supporters were devastated (curve under the level 0). There came an equalizer for the Citizens by Edin Dzeko. The City goal didn’t change anything but we can see from the charts that it gave supporters some hope and raised the level of optimism among their fans. And vice versa for the United supporters.
16:54 The winning goal from Sergio Agüero absolutely delighted the supporters so that the Man City sentiment line reached the peak.
Utd fans were devastated by the fact of loosing the title. The United curve was rapidly dropping in the number of tweets.
City fans seemed to be very keen on tweeting about winning the title against United.
The most popular tweets expressed the irony and excellence of Man City over Man United.
16:00 The fact of winning against Manchester United boss sir Alex Ferguson was so important to City fans that caused that the yellow and orange news were the most popular.
16:18 The fact that QPR player Djibril Cisse was enjoying the champions crown with City is also depicted in tweets popularity by Man City fans.
The rise of sentiment from Man Utd fans at 16.15 caused congratulations over Man City league title from sir Alex Ferguson.
