Great news, today IBM announced availability of the Rational V7 Desktop products (Rational Application Developer, Rational Data Architect, Rational Software Modeler, Rational Software Architect, Rational Systems Developer) - "Caspian" for those in the know. The big theme here is SOA Design and Construction, with integrated modeling for software services in Rational Software Modeler and Rational Software Architect for example. This is part of the continued momentum within IBM around SOA - see this big splash.
However I'd like to highlight one item that didn't make it into either the IBM SOA launch or Rational V7 launch. Within software group and global business services we (Ali Arsanjani, myself and others) have been working feverishly over the last few months to bring together our SOA development methodologies under a single banner. The culmination of this work is the release of IBM RUP for Service-Oriented Modeling and Architecture V2.4, which represents the combination of the Rational Unified Process (including RUP for SOA) and the SOMA methodologies. What this means is that IBM has a single method for the development of SOA solutions, whether you buy that method for your own use or you contract with IBM services; you the customer get the value of the combined experience of IBM's product and services communities.
Oh, and check out these additional method capabilities:
- IBM Rational Method Composer plug-in for SOA Governance V1.0
- RUP plug-in for Compliance Management V1.0 Beta
