Testers: Get Virtual, Get Agile
Green Hat technology boosts software quality & development agilityby Gina Poole
As many of you know, the overhead and time required to set up an actual test environment can be a major constraint for software development and delivery teams. The process is time-consuming and labor-intensive, and it’s made worse by the compressed delivery schedules needed in today’s most competitive markets, such as the arena for smart phones and tablets.
For the past few years, the IBM Rational team has advocated using a virtualized environment, including cloud-based resources, as a way to simulate large-scale deployment on an “as needed” basis, prior to delivery. A virtualized test environment can be set up in a matter of minutes versus weeks, and for a fraction of the cost.
Now I have something exciting to share with you...
Yesterday, IBM announced a definitive agreement to acquire Green Hat, a leader in software quality and testing solutions for traditional or cloud-based software development environments. Green Hat is a privately-held company, jointly headquartered in London, England, and Wilmington, Delaware.
Green Hat’s solutions deliver cost-effective, 24x7 access to complex virtual environments. Developers and quality professionals can test earlier and more frequently. That means much more productivity, improved software quality, and greater development agility for the entire engineering and delivery team. IBM’s leadership in application lifecycle management, quality management, and agility at scale is complemented nicely with Green Hat’s leading technology in integration testing and application virtualization. We believe this combination offers you the most innovative, complete quality management solution available today to help you transform the way you produce and deliver software -- whether for your IT needs or for software-intensive systems solutions. As a result, you’ll be able to focus on providing better quality products and services to your customers at a much faster and competitive pace.
The greatest driver behind today’s innovation is software. But the rapidly changing software development landscape means that any changes an organization makes to its software environment need to happen smoothly and without disruption. Organizations cannot afford to be encumbered by the costs, delays, and risks associated with designing and maintaining complex software development test environments.
With Green Hat technology, you’ll gain greater business agility and quality with reduced costs, faster time to market, and less risk.
Media coverage of the Green Hat acquisition continues with coverage appearing in several publications in the UK (Green Hat HQ) and throughout other global regions. See some of the highlights below.
"Four days into 2012 and Big Blue is on a roll. IBM has made clear its intent to grow its already considerable cloud portfolio even further with the acquisition of Green Hat, provider of software testing in the cloud." -- Talkin' Cloud
As enterprises embrace cloud as a part of their infrastructure, their IT environment gets more complex (before they can get simple) and any software development tool should be able to support such complex environments. In this regard, IBM’s Green Hat acquisition is interesting because it can help simulate many hardware and software environments to test applications and integrate continuously. This not only reduces the costs associated with testing environments but also accelerates the time to market. -- CloudAve
"IBM remains a heavyweight in the cloud computing market and its strong cash balance enables IBM to acquire companies with high intellectual property (IP), which will drive further growth in upcoming quarters. With $20 billion to spend till 2015 on acquisitions, we expect IBM to continue with its strategy of acquiring companies, which it deems necessary to achieve its 2015 goals." -- Zacks.com
"IBM continually positions itself in the competitive forefront and that's what its move today is all about. Furthering its acquisitions' dominance, the company purchased UK headquartered Green Hat." -- Technorati
In a statement Wednesday, Michael Azoff, principal analyst at Ovum, said: "IBM's announcement to acquire Green Hat will complement its existing application lifecycle management tools portfolio in providing a capability to rapidly setup test labs for complex heterogeneous systems spanning mainframe to distributed environments, including cloud and mobile." -- ZDNet Asia
"One of the top three mobile providers in Europe has reduced its testing time by 50 percent and saved about $1 million over a three-year period," Charles Chu said. "One of the top three commercial banks using the software has reduced its manual testing time from 10 days down to 10 minutes and it has saved over $7 million to date." -- NewsFactor
"Green Hat is a great win for IBM as they help their customers improve the quality of software applications by enabling developers to leverage cloud computing technologies during the application development process. They do this by permitting the development team to more fully conduct testing on a software application well before it is delivered to the web." -- CIO Zone
