If you use an external search engine to find Informix® documentation and get hits in information centers, make sure you go to the right information center. For example, often topics in the information center for Informix version 10 are listed before topics in the later information centers. That's because the version 10 information center has been around longer and had more hits. For example, if you search for "Informix create table" you'll get a couple of version 10 information center topics right at the top, but no topics from the version 11.70 information center on the first page of results.
To find the right documentation for your Informix version, put the major version number in the search string, for example: "Informix create table 11.70". Note that "11.70" works better than just "11.7".
Here's why you should look at later information centers instead of version 10:
- New features: version 11.50 and 11.70 have many new product features. The new features do not just add to existing features, but in some cases actually replace older functionality. What you read about in version 10 manuals might not exist anymore.
- Accuracy: version 11.70 manuals are updated with the latest documentation defect fixes every fix pack. Version 10 manuals have not been updated since 2005.
- Translated documentation: version 11.70 has more manuals translated into more languages than any previous version.
- Better documentation: We've made a lot of improvements to the documentation since version 10. For example, we have replaced many references to other manuals with direct links and added information portals.
So how can you tell which information center a search hit is in? Look at the URL: each one has a version number in it:
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/idshelp/v10/...: Version 10 information center (out of service since September 2010)
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/idshelp/v111/...: Version 11.10 information center (going out of service in September 2012)
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/idshelp/v115/...: Version 11.50 information center
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/idshelp/v117/...: Version 11.70 information center
You can tell which information center you are in by looking at the title on the browser tab and the first item in the navigation tree:
If you're in the version 10 information center, you'll also see this very conspicuous header at the top of every page:
If you find yourself in the wrong information center, the links to all the others are on the home page of every Informix information center.
