Enterprise applications typically provide the infrastructure to secure the resources that they make available. Often times this is accomplished using an access control list-based security model. In enterprise level applications, it is often convenient and desirable to have the capability to make a change to one resource and have that change be automatically propagated to all related resources.
Traditional software applications have implemented this kind of security “inheritance” by copying elements of the modified access control list to all of the resources which inherit from it. However, this approach has performance and reliability issues when the number of inheriting objects becomes large, as is often the case in an enterprise application. The dynamic security inheritance model introduced in IBM FileNet P8 4.0.1 addresses these scaling issues, allowing security inheritance to millions of resources in a robust and performant manner.
