Microsoft has launched an Internet Explorer V6 sunset campaign to euthanize the ten year old browser. "...in an era of modern web standards, it’s time to say goodbye. We know that web developers are spending too much time supporting Internet Explorer 6. We understand, and we’re here to help. Join us in moving Internet Explorer 6 users to a modern browser. "
As of Feb 2011, IE6 usage comprised 12% of web users worldwide, down from 21% in Feb 2010. The goal is to reduce IE6 browser usage to less than 1% worldwide.
The site tracks usage by country. Current trends show China with the greatest penetration, nearly 35% of their web users on IE6, followed by South Korea at 25%, and India at 12%.
Microsoft encourages web developers to add a banner to their site which displays an alert to IE6 users that they are using an outdated browser and need to consider upgrading for faster and safer browsing experience and to spread the word in general.
