You will need to have a developerWorks profile in order to build these assets. If you already have one, continue on to the instructions of your choice. If you don't have a profile, please click on the URL below which contains simple instructions on how to create one.
Create a basic group if your main call to action is a “group” activity, where a custom look and feel is not a priority, like:
-Aggregating materials (links, feeds, attachments, etc.) for group consumption
-Collaboration in a message board
-Hosting files for team members to access
A Basic group is often a building block for other assets, as you’ll see on the other paths described in this guide. However, a basic group by itself might be all you need, especially if a customized look and feel is not your highest priority. If you require custom features or a customized look and feel, check out the Advanced Group and Advanced Blog guides.

Step 1: Starting a group or multiple groups is very simple. All you have to do is click on the drop down menu from the developerWorks.com home page (seen below) and go to "My Groups."
Step 2: Once you are at the groups page, all you have to do is click on the "Start a group" button. You will be asked to fill out a short form including what type of group (public or private) and the name you want for your group.
Basic Group Features:
You will notice that your group comes with different capabilities included. We call these widgets. Some of the features included are things like a message board, feeds, bookmarks, and a wiki to name a few. If you would like to add further widgets to your page all you have to do is click on the "customize" button towards the top middle section. It looks like the button below:
After that all you do is add the extra widgets that you need by clicking the add button next to them:
The new widget will appear at the bottom of the page and also in the left navigation bar seen below.
