The HMC has a standard function to copy firmware to the hard drive of the HMC for later usage: <br /> On the HMC, select a smanaged system, then under "Tasks”: “Change Licensed Internal Code for the current release”. On the “Select advanced features” window the first option is "Retrieve". With this, you can copy firmware to your HMC without using any command or performing an actual update/upgrade. <div>&nbsp;</div> (This applies to HMC V7R7.6., I don't know about availability of this option in older versions) <div>&nbsp;</div> Regards, <br /> Floor Nefkens

Right, but using the retrieve method requires you to use an FTP server. If you use the method outlined in this article then no FTP server is needed.

can't figure out what I'm doing wrong here-- lslic command returns none none none. <div>&nbsp;</div> <div>&nbsp;</div> hscroot &gt; lslic -m us-01-pa-vm002-SN1094ACR -t sys -r mountpoint -d /home/hscroot/01AL740_100_042 -F retrievable_release concurrent_retrievable_level disruptive_retrievable_level <br /> None None None <div>&nbsp;</div> hscroot&gt; ls -al 01AL740_100_042 <br /> total 38916 <br /> drwxr-xr-x 2 hscroot hmc 4096 2013-08-12 12:48 . <br /> drwxr-xr-x 8 hscroot hmc 4096 2013-08-12 12:55 .. <br /> -rw-r--r-- 1 hscroot hmc 39794670 2013-08-12 12:48 01AL740_100_042.rpm

It looks like you are missing the ".xml" file. You have to download the ".rpm" and the ".xml" and put both of them in the directory.

Brain, <br /> A week ago when I was working on power server firmware upgrade I had an issue where service processor was reset (due to a file system on service processor was full - got to know from IBM support). This was triggered when I committed firmware from "T" side to "P" side and I didn't even upgrade firmware. <div>&nbsp;</div> Server was rebooted about a year ago and IBM support recommends to reboot server once a year. What do you say about this? <div>&nbsp;</div> How to check uptime of the physical server? By IBM supports help we checked uptime of service processor by loogin in to ASMI. Is this same for physical server? <div>&nbsp;</div> Thanks <br /> Bharath

Hi Brian <div>&nbsp;</div> If this output is received: <br /> lslic -m Serverx -t sys -r mountpoint -d /home/hscroot/AL770_076_032 -F retrievable_release concurrent_retrievable_level disruptive_retrievable_level <br /> None 76 76 <div>&nbsp;</div> Does it mean that the available/retrievable firmware can be installed as a concurrent (no discruptive) or as a disruptive? In other words: one will have a choice which one to choose?. Or it means it will be both concurrent and disruptive ?

I would recommend reviewing the firmware readme file to determine if it is concurrent.

FYI - I recently tried to update some Power5 servers to SF240_371. I went through FixCentral, but the download only included the RPM. There was no HTML or XML with the order - via DownloadDirector or Bulk FTP. <div>&nbsp;</div> Similarly, by attempting the update from the HMC, directing it to use the IBM site (instead of local FTP server), it told me there were no updates available. The system is currently at SF240_358. <div>&nbsp;</div> Not sure if they pull the HTML/XML files after the FW updates have sufficiently aged, but the HMC (v7r7.4) clearly needs at least the XML file to identify which files are for which platforms.

Update: <div>&nbsp;</div> When you're ordering firmware through FixCentral, you must have the following checkbox selected, it is not selected by default. <div>&nbsp;</div> "Include informational files, and files required by the HMC and Systems Director for installation (not available for physical media)" <div>&nbsp;</div> Unchecked, you get the firmware RPM only. Checked, you get all the other files (XML, HTML, Readme, etc)
