Our First Meeting With the Da Nang City Government Leaders – Day 3
timhahn 100000F0AC Visits (1171)
As a part of our work on this service corps assignment, we are expected to work closely with members of the local government departments. However, in order to do this, it is necessary, like in many other government situations, to follow proper procedures and to establish the support of the appropriate leaders in the community.
Today, we had the opportunity to meet with Department of Information and Communication (DIC) Chairman Chien along with leaders from several departments in the Da Nang government offices. In particular, we met the leaders of the Da Nang Office of Natural Resources and Environment (DONRE), Da Nang Water Company (Dawaco), Da Nang Office of Foreign Affairs (DOFA), Da Nang Office of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD), and Da Nang Office of Transportation (DOT).
During the meeting, the government leaders introduced themselves to us. We, through our spokesperson for the meeting, Peter Williams and our interpreter, introduced our team as well as members from the local IBM team who will be helping us throughout the week. We went on to express our gratitude to the city of Da Nang for having us work with them and our excitement to get started in working with the individual departments. Chairman Chien assured us that his departments will work with us to get us all the information we need to assess their current projects, identify improvements, and recommend a path to the future to support a city of innovation and knowledge-based workforce for Da Nang.
At the end of the meeting, gifts were presented. We received a beautiful engraved plate containing interesting features of the city of Da Nang.
The meeting was short, but a very good way to start off our work with the city leaders. With this warm introduction, we are ready to get started in earnest at the beginning of next week. We will have meetings with each of the departments to learn details of what they are currently doing, what their plans are, and what areas are in need of improvement. We will be working through interpreters for the majority of our discussions with the teams which will certainly be an new experience for most of us.
I am looking forward to next week when we start our in-depth discussions and analysis.
