The SAN Volume Controller (SVC)
has truly come of age in 2010.
With release 6.1 we not only combine it with the very mature RAID adapters of
the DS8000 to produce the Storwize
but we continue to develop the SVC as the world’s leading Storage
For existing SVC clients, you will be able to download SVC code 6.1 once it
reaches the Generally Available (GA) date,
which is scheduled for November 12,
2010. The announcement letter is here: http://ow.ly/2TTVB
Whyte is planning a detailed set of blog posts about the improvements from
both a hardware and software perspective.
So I thought I would just list the key changes until he gets round to posting his blogs:
Names have been changed to make SVC GUI similar to more standard names, i.e.
vdisk is now volume,
mdisk group is now storage pool, error is now event.
New SVC Graphical
User Interface (GUI)
Fantastic new XIV like GUI that you access direct from the SVC nodes (not from
This means you just
point your browser at the SVC IP cluster IP address .
Removal of the16 character name length
restriction (raised to 63), raised WWNN limit to 256, max vdisk now 1PB,
Easy Tier & SSDs
in SVC v6.1
Easy Tier added at no extra charge. Note: Users of solid-state devices (SSDs) on the SAN Volume Controller
can not install SVC 6.1.0 at this time. This shoiuld be corrected in the next minor release.
Provisioning new SVC
Changes to make it easier to setup a cluster at install.
SVC Code Upgrades
Removal of GUI package. Now you just update SVC code. There will be a tool to update 188.8.131.52 to 6.1
As with 5.1 code... you cannot install 6.1 on a 2145-4F2 node as the 4F2 cannot run the 64 bit OS used by 5.1 and 6.1
SVC to Backend Controller
Changes in block size SVC uses with back end disk (increase from 32 KB to 256
SVC and Storwize
Support for Storwize V7000 as backend disk to SVC.
Storage Controller /
Host / Tool Interoperability
Added more host and disk support (like VSphere 4.1, EMC V-Max, Compellent and
new Fujitsu Eternus disk controller models).
Addition of the SCSI write-same command for use with VSphere 4.1.
And best of all....
The firmware update will be free of charge... just download it and install it...
