AIXpert Blog is about the AIX operating system from IBM running on POWER based machines called Power Systems and software related to it like IBM Systems Director, PowerVM for virtualisation and PowerSC for security plus performance monitoring and nmon
I have tried to get permission to pass on these numbers publically but got no answer at all. As these are facts rather than opinions, I see no harm in them. So I will work on the old theory: "it is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission" ... here goes. The AIX Virtual User Group often asks a few questions as part of the registration process for the next webinar session and it generates fascinating statistics from real POWER and AIX users. Observations: The people that join the AIX Virtual User Group are well above the... [More]
I had this combination recently and it drove me nuts. Plug the Fibre Channel cable from the Storwize V7000 in to the Brocade FC Switch (IBM 2498-B40 = Brocade 5100) and the ports would not go green but flash orange on and off and end up in Port Status=Disabled and Healthy=Faulty on the switch and the V7000 in waiting for a cable state. Both the the V7000 and FC Switch are the latest firmware. I assumed faulty GBIC at one or other end and/or a faulty FC cables at first but after trying many combinations and my two new (second-hand from... [More]
If you're planning to upgrade the microcode on your p590/p595 system, I recommend waiting for the 153 version which should be out soon. (The current version is 150, Nov 2005) If you have already planned an outage for the upgrade, I would consider downloading the 153 ISO image from the server located in Boulder. open a DOS window ftp testcase-blue.boulder.ibm.com enter 'anonymous' as the id enter 'your e-mail address' as the password cd /hardware/fromibm/9119/ bin mget 01SF230_153_120.iso Be sure to check the prereq's before upgrading: -... Warning: If you get these commands wrong then you will destroy your LU virtual disks & virtual machine content. Please tell me, if you do - I enjoy a good laugh :-) Please, test the commands & your understanding on a test SSP! Shared Storage Pool four Ksh script commands and a program that I hope you will find useful: ncluster - status of all VIOS nlu - improved lu replacement npool - storage pool use nmap - finds if a lu is online (mapped) on any VIOS nslim - copy a fat LU... This blog also applies to Power Servers running Linux on Power native on the machine. While you can perform a text based Linux install on the dumb console terminal emulator (see previous AIXpert Blog about the serial cable that you need and the software) as a challenge to survive the Tab navigation, space selection, sometimes the cursor works and occasional Function Key show stopper (SUSE SLES 11) - I would recommend a VNC install. First, you can get back to your desk to run VNC viewer client to complete the install and not stand in the noisy... [More]

Here is a great index page for AIX information. Most ofthe links are to www.ibm.com ... but you get to avoid theIBM search engine :-) One of the very nice features is that every link (or leastevery one I tried) opens a new window. http://www.aix.lap.hu There is also a Google-based search engine for AIX: http://www.aixsearch.com

I recently got asked about this - here is my response (the language has been toned down a bit from the original). Internal disks on a E870/880? - you having a laugh! Are you mad? Are you a Luddite? Is the date 1995 in your country? Three reasons: VERY slow (200 IOPS) compared to a caching SAN disk unit with dozens of disks or even a Flash SAN unit at hundreds of times faster. Why would you want your VIOS to be that slow at disk I/O? MUCH lower RAS than a SAN disks (single brown spinning disks are single points of... [More]
Starting in AIX 5.3 ML5, there is a new "topas -R" option that records theperformance of all partitions on a physical server. The command is runon just one server, and the output is stored in the /etc/perf directory. The "topasout" command converts the output file into a CSV or XML file. The CSV file can be imported into the nmon Analyser 3.2.3+. (Requires AIX 5.3 TL5 service pack 4 with APAR IY87993) The advantage is that topas is a supported tool. The disadvantage isthat it is not well documented, and you have to do some of the parsing. ... [More]
