Firefox on AIX to download directly to AIX

I am currently updating my AIX systems and AIX 7 TL2 with its first service pack is now available for download from ESS or IBM Entitlem Software Support to spell it out in full (htt
The README in the downloaded .tar.gz file tells you about a bunch of open source software you need before installing Firefox but forgot to say they were all included in the package in the RPMS/ppc directory. So I installed them and then used smitty installp for Firefox - this could have well worked in one step but I deleted the older versions of these packages first to clean up. On a new AIX install this it would have been a really simple no brainer install.
Once installed I found /usr/bin/firefox in the $PATH and is a script to start it up and it is working fine. It even has http://www.ibm.com as the default website - How strange? :-) I am using Tight VNC Server from perzl.org to provide X Windows.
On my long running repository machine, I updated Firefox and got this strange error
# firefoxThis had me worried until I realised it just could not find the libxml2.a library with is hidden away in /usr/ccs/lib and not in the $PATH or regular library directories. For some reason the link is missing. This was fixed with the following command:
ln /usrWell Firefox all works fine from a few hours testing I have done - just getting on with the job downloading AIX software and related packages and open source like Apache. Sure some of the time IBM just tells you to how to FTP for the download and I guess some could be downloaded via wget but there are websites where you have to click a link or it is just much easier to use a browser directly.
One odd thing is that is just can't handle the http
Oh well! I am enjoying downloading straight to AIX again via Firefox and our excellent server room bandwidth. Then it is NFS mounted to the target machine and installed quickly. A 3.5 GB AIX .iso takes 2 to 3 minutes - only just long enough to brew a cuppa tea!
