This week, I have a confession to make. I hate Apple…or at least, I used to. I started my career as a hardware guy…selling PCs no less. So to me and anyone else selling Windows-based PCs, Apple was the evil empire. At that time, their OS was awesome, and their hardware was junk. Yet creative types and education customers would still buy their gear, even when our ThinkPads were way better products. Fast forward a few years. Apple has come out with the iPod, iPhone and iPad, and essentially,... [More]
Recently I needed to pull specific analysis results from my deployment via the REST API. The only way to do this is using the /api/query ( http://bigfix.me/restapi/?id=306 ). This meant that I needed to figure out a session relevance statement to do this and quickly. Since I’m not a native “session relevance speaker”, I looked at my options. One was to research, research, and more research using very valuable public resources like the Inspectors Guide ( http://support.bigfix.com/inspectors/Fixlet%20Objects_Any.html ),... [More]

The product’s formal name is IBM Endpoint Manager for Mobile Devices, (IEMfM). Boring. This product came as a development effort from an acquisition IBM made in 2010 called BigFix. So I just call it BigFix Mobile. You can too. Say it with me. BigFix Mobile. See? Way cooler than IEM for Mobile. Anyway, about me-I started with IBM... [More]

I wanted to take a minute to highlight two recent success stories with IBM Endpoint Manager and how customers are gaining real value from the solution, which may prompt you to think about additional uses in your own environment. I think it is important to look at actual customer savings to understand the value of a solution. This reminds me of a story that I heard on NPR yesterday concerning the G8 Summit in Ireland. Ireland was hit very hard by the 2008 financial crisis, but David Cameron wanted things to look nice for the... [More]

Detecting installations of a particular software on Windows is a simple job, but things get worst in case of Linux and UNIX, especially if the software was not installed using native binaries like rpm or deb packages. Windows has the registry (start -> run -> regedit.exe) to list all the required details of a product like install path, product version, locale or product type etc., but on Linux or UNIX it may not be that easy. There's a similar problem about detecting DB2 installations on Non-Windows OS without running ab IBM DB2... [More]
