WebSphere Portal supports two types of analytics. There is an Active Site Analytics and Server Side Analytics which sometimes is known as Passive Site Analytics. Server side site analytics uses log files that are created by Webservers for reporting Web requests that are sent to the server. The portal server also creates log files that can measure sessions, users, pages, and portlets based on how the the site-analytics reporting engine is configured in the resource environment provider called"WP_SiteAnalyzerLogService" in the WebSphere Administration console. Detail information on both active site analytics and passive site analytics for WebSphere Portal can be found in the following article: Site analytic support in IBM WebSphere Portal 6.1.5 . Just be careful on how many loggers you enable. They have a performance impact 3% to 10% and you need an archive strategy because the logs files fill up very quickly.

During most large service engagement, the analytic design is an afterthought or delegated to low priority. Assumptions are made that it can be absorbed in any resource buffer. But in reality, a proper analytic/metric design requires at least 3 man months. The first problem is to identify and collect the requirements. This requires first enablement and then co-ordination of multiple business departments each with potentially conflicting agendas. Then you need to define the meta-tags and map content types and attributes. Tags need to be embeded to track downloads, search (need to crack open the portlet file and update the JSP), and the presentation templates (for LWCM). Tags need to be configured such that you can track the specific steps to completing activity.
Here is a high level analytic project plan for WebSphere Portal/LWCM;
